Steve S Posted November 18 #1 Posted November 18 Hello Venture friends. I had serious back surgery in January and February and haven't been able to ride this year. I rode about an hour yesterday and today my buddy and I rode to another town to have lunch, getting about 100 miles in today. The back is feeling great so that won't be a problem riding the Venture. The bad news is that after I got home, I was moving the bike around in the shop with the engine off and I got off balance and it fell over pinning my right foot under the rear floorboard. My buddy got the bike off me and up, then helped me up. I walked around some and kicked around in the shop about 30 minutes. The pain got bad enough that I decided to go to the urgent clinic for an exam. Sure enough, the Xray showed two small fractures on each side of the ankle. So now I am sidelined for another 6 weeks. HOWEVER, if I do what the doctor says, I will be up and running in time for the spring thaw. 3
Marcarl Posted November 19 #2 Posted November 19 Well now that you know what that feels like, is there any other pains you might like to be associated with? Might want to get then in at the same time eh? You can't seem to win for loosen, but hey, it's winter comin' on so be happy it didn't happen 6 months from now!! Heal well. 1
sleepy2 Posted November 19 #3 Posted November 19 Sorry for the luck your having! Get healed up and ride ! 1
RDawson Posted November 20 #4 Posted November 20 I feel your pain, I finally got the hardware installed in my back last month. Maybe we can meet up and get a ride in this summer, I owe you a lunch sometime. 1
Steve S Posted November 22 Author #5 Posted November 22 I am looking forward to a ride and lunch with you once I get moving again. The Ortho doctor says the break needs to be pinned so I am having surgery next Wednesday for him to put 2 screws in it. When we meet, we can compare scars and see who has the worst. 😁 1
N3FOL Posted November 26 #7 Posted November 26 Per the thread subject, I was able to ride to and from work. Heat is essential to enjoy the ride. 1
bpate4home Posted November 26 #8 Posted November 26 Rode the bike to work this morning, 47 when I left the house. Still enjoyed the ride. Layers are important. Should be a gorgeous ride home at 70. 2
N3FOL Posted November 27 #9 Posted November 27 No riding for me today up through the weekend. With the Thanksgiving holiday and weekend is upon us, people love to party and some may be venturing on the road slightly impaired by too much food and alcohol to drink. With that said, I am not riding my bike. Enjoy your Turkey days with friends and family. 3
Steve S Posted November 28 Author #10 Posted November 28 Update on the broken leg. I had surgery Wednesday, and it was a very simple short surgery. The doc made to small pokes and put 2 screws in the broken part of the leg bone. Thankfully it wasn't part of the weight bearing bone and I am still able to hobble around in a boot without having to use a wheelchair. It looks like I may be back to walking in 6 or 8 weeks. Evidently the foot got under the saddlebag and the saddlebag rail impacted the ankle. When the bike fell, it came down hard and I hit the concrete pretty solidly. I was stunned and it took me a minute to even think about getting up. My biggest concern was my back due to the surgery I had back in January. Thankfully I have not had any pain from my back after this fall. My biggest problem is having to sit in a recliner with my foot above my waist all day. I got really bored after the first day of this. 🙄 If you will look closely at the lower right side of the leg bone, you will see the fracture of the extended part of the bone. That is what he screwed down. On the left side, there is a crack in the other bone that was not totally fractured, so they didn't do anything to it feeling it will heal properly on it own.
RDawson Posted November 29 #12 Posted November 29 Glad it’s not any worse. I watched Col Steve Austin as a kid, now I think a lot of us are becoming the new $6 million men. I’ve got the screws and anchors in my shoulder and a hardware store in my back according to the X-ray tech a couple weeks ago. This getting old stuff ain’t for sissies 😫 3
N3FOL Posted November 29 #13 Posted November 29 I really liked that show and I would even stop working on my homework just to watch the show for an hour. Your new $6 Million dollar men sounds reasonable taking into account inflation. 1

Marcarl Posted November 30 #15 Posted November 30 I have sound effects as well, even when I'm not moving. Funny how that happens. Marca is not often impressed. I keep telling her that the sound effects are for the benefit of those that might have missed the other attributes. 1 1
ReinyRooster Posted November 30 #16 Posted November 30 Don't mean to make light of anyone's misfortune but by the look of this thread we could start another forum section about injuries and surgeries! None of us are getting any younger so we gotta start being more careful! 1

None of us are getting any younger so we gotta start being more careful! Well in that case, allow me to contribute... About a month after getting my RSV, I popped over a small hill to find a car stopped in my lane - facing me! Apparently it was easier for him to pull over to check his mailbox instead of pulling into the driveway and getting out of the car. I managed to avoid the car but hit the ditch. Shattered the collarbone into 5 pieces. 3

bpate4home Posted December 2 #24 Posted December 2 I rarely go to the Dr. It's just a personal opinion that I'll leave at that. Went to one a couple of years ago, first time in 6 - 7 years, for pain in my shoulder when working over my head for an hour or more. Started happening when I was building a covered, gazebo type area in our back yard. Anyway, because I hadn't been in a long time he ordered a bunch of tests and x-rays of the shoulder, then decided to do both shoulders and my knees since they always hurt some. I go in for the results a couple of weeks later and he tells me about all my blood work being normal and he doesn't see anything wrong with me. I remind him I came in because of my shoulder. "Oh yeah, let's look at those x-rays. I see some arthritis", goes to the next one. "I see quite a bit of Arthritis." emphasizing arthritis a little. He gets to the 4th and 5th slides, looks at me and asks how old I am, "56". He responds with "Wow, I see a lot of Arthritis for your age. You never took it easy on your body, did you?". After a little laugh I told him "Live hard, die hard." 1
N3FOL Posted December 2 #25 Posted December 2 You are too young to have arthritis. Hit the gym and all of that arthritis will disappear.
