  2. Rode my 89 1255 miles round trip from SE Iowa to Little Rock AR to a conference there. This is the first trip I've done like this and I have a lot more confidence in the bike and myself now. Anyway, after having lunch and a brief snooze on the grass (anybody else do that when they ride?) I turned the key, hit the ignition and NOTHING! Rats! Must be that electrical short and the battery went dead while I was sleeping. I went into the restaurant & the owner offered to give me a jump. We hooked up the cables and again NOTHING. Now what could it be? As I asked him to check his connections I happened to look at the red toggle switch that I never use on the left handle bar. YUP! The kill switch was off. So I said to the good samaritan, without mentioning my serreptitious red button correction, "Maybe it is connected right now" and hit the ignition with the now clearly unnecessary jumper cables still attached. And it started. Amazing. I thanked the good fellow and quickly drove away after reassembling the cover and tank bag and dressing with gratitude that I hadn't spent $100 and called a local garage. Duh. BTW, I love the twisties in AR.
  3. I've got my carbs ready to go back on, and was installing the throttle cables. When I was guiding the bottom THROTTLE OPEN cable, it let me know that it needs to be replaced....it has a couple of broken strands. On one of the 'other' Venture sites I used to belong to, the subject of broken throttle cables on Gen 1's with cruise control used to come up periodically. I never used to pay too much attention to the details though, because my 83 is a Standard and doesn't have cruise. Of course, my 89 does. Does anybody remember the details?? Was it only Mk I bikes? Which cable breaks? Frank D.
  4. Does anyone know if the throttle cables from the TD will work on a Venture? I am looking at upgrading to Stainless to match the brake and clutch lines and found an inexpensive set for the TD (comparatively speaking) and was wondering with the part numbers being different and all if the cable length and connections between the two is the same. Thanks Paul
  5. My wife would like to install a set of risers on her 2006 vstar1100 custom. Barrons has a set that gives 2" pull back without a rise that might work. It looks like all the control lines will still be usable. Anybody have any other suggestions. I put a set of Motorcycle Larry riser/triple clamps on my fjr and they worked great but can't seem to see anything for the 1100 there. If you have a riser in mind but it might need longer cables please let me know about them as well just warn me I will need longer cables. I think 2 inchs back and an inch or so up would be about right. Al
  6. A huge thanks to SMSgt for this excellent article. Kent did a great job and it is much appreciated. Installing throttle cables on a Royal Star Venture. I did this project while I was doing a change over from RSV handle bars to RSTD bars. As with most jobs on the RSV you will need to remove the driver’s seat and gas tank. This not only protects the tank from damage but gives you access to the throttle/cruise control pulleys. After you have removed the tank remove the black plastic left frame neck cover then you will have complete access to the throttle cables and clutch hydraulic line. If you are doing the clutch it will need to take off the left side lower fairing and to take that off it will easier if you take off the right lower fairing as well. To make your job easier take off the left air cleaner and the mounting bracket. As far as break and clutch hoses are concerned it is a simple remove and replace. You will need to bleed the lines. If you don’t know how to do this you might seek a little help from your friends. Remove the clutch and front brake master cylinders. This is necessary to access the screws that secure the front controls and if you are doing a bar change you will need them off anyway to reinstall on the new bars. Once you have removed the master cylinders you are ready to split the throttle handle bar control/twist grip. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image001.jpg Remove the two screws securing the right handle bar control/throttle twist grip. It is easiest done with a stubbie phillips screw driver. Sometimes a long screwdriver will not fit between the fairing and the screw. I replaced my phillips screws with allen screws because they are less likely to strip out while loosening them. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image004.jpg This is showing the right control split. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image005.jpg You can take the aft (the half with the stop switch on the top) apart by just taking the wire bundle out of the slot on the side with the cables coming out of it. This will give you more working room. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image006.jpg With the control split you can slide the twist grip and all off the handlebar. If you don’t have enough slack you can loosen and rotate the handle bars down this should work for you if all else fails you may have to take the handlebars off. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image007.jpg Once the control is off the bar you can lift the grip up and out of the control giving you access to the cables. Simple rotate the cables to the slot and it will come from the grip. Note, I hadn’t separated the two halves at this point http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image008.jpg Once you have both cables loose you should feed them around the front of the triple tree so they are on the left side of the motorcycle. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image009.jpg On the left side of the motorcycle you will find the pulley assemble for the throttles and cruise control cable. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image013.jpg Slide the plastic cable guide back to give you room to work on the pulley assembly. It is the same kind as on the handlebars it should just slide one direction or the other then back. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image015.jpg Showing the cable clamp moved back to over the carburetors. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image017.jpg With the cable clamp pushed back and cables pulled to the left side of the motorcycle the pulley assembly will lay over without any trouble. This will expose the screws and make it easier to work on the cables. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image020.jpg Remove the two screws that are now on the top of the pulley case. (Picture shows screws already removed.) http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image023.jpg Opened cable pulley case. The Cruise control is the pulley on the top. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image024.jpg Another view showing the inside of the case. The one cable end in the front of the picture is the cruise control cable. Be careful not to let the spring not zing into space. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image026.jpg Lift up on the single piece of spring and the other end will come off and not be any problem. You will be able to see how it comes out once you look inside the case. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image028.jpg The hook end of the spring goes on the bottom, next to the pulley. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image030.jpg Inside of the cable case without the spring. The blue arrow is pointing at the place where the spring end will set when it is together. The red arrow is pointing where the hook end of the spring goes against the top pulley. Remember this is the cruise control pulley. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image033.jpg With the cruise control pulley removed you can see the cables going toward the carburetors and handle bars. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image034.jpg The two silver buttons are the cable ends for the throttle twist grip. Make sure you put the return in where the return cable came from and the pull where the pull cable belongs. This isn’t hard if you just pay attention. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image037.jpg Remove the screw and bracket that holds the return and pull cables going to the throttle twist grip. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image039.jpg This shows the screw and hold down bracket and the throttle cables going to the top of the last two pulleys in the case. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image040.jpg Remove the cables one at a time so as not to get mixed up. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image041.jpg Wrap the cable around the pulley the same way it came off. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image042.jpg Remove the return cable and install the new cable the same way the old cable came off. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image043.jpg Hold the new cables completely in the cable indentations. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image044.jpg Install the clamp and screw with the cables completely against the indent. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image045.jpg With both cables in and secure you will need to put the top, cruise, pulley in place. There are notches in the lower pulleys shown by the arrows and on the cruise control pulley shown by the small white squares inside the pulley. Make sure they are aligned correctly so your cruise control will work when you are done. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image050.jpg This is the bottom of the cruise control pulley. The arrows are pointing the notches that will go inside the notches in the lower pulley. Put the pulley in so at to allow it to pull the throttle open when the cruise control is set. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image053.jpg Showing the cruise control pulley in place. Notice position of cable end. It should be about the same position as when it came out. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image055.jpg Spring in place on pulley. Note position of “hook” as it fits in top pulley. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image057.jpg Spring pulled around to stop. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image059.jpg Cover back in place. Don’t forget to put the screws in. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image060.jpg Pulley case back in place with cables routed around front and cable clamp back in place. http://www.venturerider.org/cables/cables_files/image061.jpg Replace all the parts you have taken off in reverse order and go for a ride. 7. My 83 VR needs new throttle cables. How much disassembling is required to do it? Do I need to pull the battery and airbox to do it, or is there some slick trick I'm not seeing? Initially, I'm just doing the cables running from the twist grip. Thanks
  8. I’m changing out my throttle cables for longer ones to accommodate RSTD bars on my RSV. It looks like a relatively easy job until I got to the junction where the cables all come together. I don’t want to take something apart and have some little part zing in to nowhere land. When I got to the junction box (or whatever it is called) first thing I see is that the screws that hold the thing together are on the inboard side of the junction box. Now do I need to take all 5 cables off the motorcycle and take the junction box to the workbench or is there some way to work with this while installed on the motorcycle? Are there any surprises or secrets that I need to be aware of? Thanks Kent:bang head:
  9. I added 1 1/2 risers and rerouted the cables because they would bind on a hard right turn. I have new cables coming that are +2. In the mean time my throttle is sticking with the bike running. I try it with the bike off and they return fine, with the bike running they are sticking. I did do the driving lights , relay, mod while I had the fairing split. I don't see anything in the way. Any ideas here??
  10. I installed risers last night and was wondering how people rerouted the cables and if you have pictures.
  11. I have a 2007 venture.I have been wanting to upgrade the handlebars on my bike for sometime and came across a great deal from a member here and bought a set of Tour Deluxe bars to replace my stock ones. This past Saturday, I proceeded to swap everything out. This is when the nightmare began. When changing out the throttle cables, I opened up the junction box where all the cables come together, and the spring that is in there popped out and went in on top of the front of the engine and fell down like a plinko chip.I have removed the lower farings to get better access as well as remove the engine braces to be able to see better and still cannot find this spring.Tried a magnet on a telescoping pole and put it anywhere i could hoping the spring could be located. No luck.Tried using air compressor and blowing up in and around engine to maybe dislodge and fall out.No luck.I went online to order new one. I found part# and ordered one.$5.50 for spring and $9.95 to ship.I received e-mail today that says this spring is on back order until July 25 2012 or later. I called other Yamaha retailers and was told the same thing. One checked and said there was not one in any warehouse or dealership in the States or in Japan.I asked how that was possible, they still make this motorcycle. He said he did not know.He did say the junction box is exclusive to the Venture and Tour Deluxe and the 1st Generation Venture.Does any one have one thy can part with new or old, does not matter?I am desperate
  12. I got ambitious after I got home from work today, got the exhaust system back on the bike, and the radiator and cooling system back on, waiting on the throttle cables to arrive. starting to look like a motorcycle again.
  13. www.motorcycleaudioonline.com has roughtly 25% discount on new wired headsets and connector cables. Check which cables you might need though (P or Z), they vary by model (Standard, Performance, Elite).
  14. Yep, that's me....... I'm in the process of putting the bike back together after some major work (new front springs, new rear tire, wires for trailer lighting to my Voyager kit, yadda, yadda), and like a fool I didn't take pictures of the handle bar cable routing. The thing is I also tool the steering head out to clean and pack the bearings. I've got the front end back together but I can't remember if the air lines for the front forks go infront or behind the cables from the handle bars. I checked my scanned copy of the FSM, but the pictures are crap so they are no help. Does anyone have picutes of how the front fork air lines and handle bar cables are routed? I will forever be in your debt. Thanks in advance.
  15. Someone once gave me this information once, or I found it, and now I have miss placed it or deleted it by accident. I know I saved it somewhere. I need the 650-08783 Flanders Bars with the cables deal pacifically for our bikes. Sorry, but I have looked for two hours and I give up. Thank you for your help. Fuzzy :smash2:
  16. Having trouble getting the cables off 1983 Venture so i can take the carburetors of for cleaning. Does anyone have any ideas. Thanks Dave
  17. I would like a set of new cables. Are any available here?
  18. so I am illiterate when it comes to loading pics so I will try to explain my question. Tore down the bike for 2nd gear and am putting her back together but I have come to a problem that I nees assisstance with, The cables that open and close the flaps in the carbs were replaced by me but I am unsure which cable goes in which hole on the carb cluster? The two short cables that come out of the plastic box (Where the cruise cable goes into) and then go to the top of the carb cluster into two holes that hold the cable which one goes where? I have a great pic of the question but its stuck in my email.. Any help would be appreciated. Mike:225:
  19. When I put the Barons risers on I had to reroute my throttle cables. while doing so I had to disassemble the part where all the cables come together on the left side behind the neck cover, 5 in all,( 2 in, 2 out and the cable coming up from the cruise servo). When I opened the housing that little clockspring popped out before I could see how tight it's wound . Put it back together with 1 turn on it and now my cruise control won't set. All the dash lights say it's working but it doesn't hold the throttle. Any advice from the RSV tech gods would be awesome. My 1550 mile ride last weekend would have been much more enjoyable with a working cruise control.
  20. I have the 86 and it is doing ok. It has sat in the garage for the last 5 weeks while I recover from another hernia surgery. Ok throttle is a little stiff. Also have to really crank hard for wide open throttle. Cables appear to be in stock location. There is a differance if the bars are turned left or right. I have not checked anything much yet really. I did notice when I put the carbs back on the attempting WOT the bracket at the carbs actually deflects and moves some. There is nothing stuck or stiff in the carb assembly. worked great by hand when rebuilding and reinstalling them. Am planning on lubeing the cables up with my cable ease stuff. Wondering what all fairng pieces I have to remove to get to the cruise control cable box and if people have issues with the routing of the cables especially in the triple tree area. Thanks everybody.
  21. I've got a set of RSTD bars on the way to install on ol' blue and I'm looking for all the information I can find on rerouting the throttle cables. Anybody have any tips or even pics to help a guy figure all of this out? I'm a little mechanically challenged.
  22. I have a 1988 VR. Is there anywhere I can buy plug and play cables for the intercom. Everything is there just need cables from the bike (driver & Passenger) and headsets. Any place sell the headsets?
