1. Where is there a good place to get a super brace for a first gen? Does anybody here make them, if so how much.
2. Been meaning to post this for a while now. Went to Wally World and got a Zefal aluminum bicycle bottle cage for $7 Went to Lowe's and picked up 1 Mending Brace for $2, 2 rubber lined P clamps for $2 and some nuts and bolts for $2 I cut the Mending Brace to sizes I needed than rounded off the squares corners on a grinder. I Attached it to my Mirror Stem on the right side just above the Brake Fluid Reservoir. Since the holder is metal I can spread it wider or squeeze it smaller to fit any size cup or can I might be using. If the resizing ever causes it to break all I have to do is replace the bottle cage for $7 and swap it out. For the passenger I simply used a a conduit clamp and a piece of Mending Brace. I riveted the cup holder and the mending brace together then used the conduit clamp around the passenger hand railing and attached that to the mending brace. Here are the pics of the material and the actual mounting for the front sorry forgot pic for the passenger cup holder
3. Can't seem to find the specs for the brace bolts eitehr in the owners or the shop manual. I am replacing mine with a SuperBrace (Thanks to Golf&Venture) & I see on various posts 14 - 15 ft Lbs is assumed so I've set mine to that. Just want to make sure it's correct.
4. I'm at a loss regarding the mounting of the left cowling! There is a mount tab at the bottom rear that does not match any mounting point on the frame??? It's in line with the removable brace which goes across the side of the engine but there aint nuthin there to bolt to. The left cowling and front "tie-in" were missing when I bought her. Help!!
5. My bike is handling very well since I put progressives and the Condor Brace on it. BUT.....today I noticed something I have never noticed before and I'm wondering if I have a problem or if it is normal. I was at a full stop. I gave the handle bars a "shake" back and forth...as if I was trying to shaking water off the front tire. Just very quick jerk to left and back to center. The front end felt like it "rebounded" As if I gave it a twist that went down the forks and then after I stopped, it came back up the forkss and gave a bit of an "echo" shake! Like I said....it's handling really well!!!!! Condor Brace is tight, neck bearing bounce test looks good....Not sure what else it could be? Is this normal???
6. I have a smart phone and use it for a speedometer, navigation and music on the bike (but refuse to use it as an actual phone while on the bike ) Anyway I have never been able to find a mount that I really liked, nor could I find one that would position it where I wanted it, so I had to make my own. I went to Radio Shack and started looking around and found a car mount system for $20 that I could cannibalize (don't tell BoomerCPO's pygmies though). I then used some mending brace and rubber lined P clamps and attached it to my mirror stem on the left side. The hardest part was finding a way to have at least a three point mounting for stability. As You can see in the pics there are three p clamps holding it in position. Additionally you will see that the piece that it all attaches to is actually setting on the top of the reservoir cover. All and all it makes it a very stable mounting. As for the swivel ball on the holder I had to used a grinder and flattened it out a little bit to accommodate the bolt head under it. This winter I will be cleaning it up by using shorter bolts. I will also be replacing the mending brace with metal strapping and will add rubber to the bottom where it sits on the reservoir. If I can find a local place to do it I might even get it chromed. One side note is that the holder squeezes the phone very well and I have never had it move or try to bounce out . . . well wait there was this one time I forgot to squeeze it shut and took of down the road. Lucky for me I looked over at it just as it was getting ready to leave my presence at 60 MPH and I was able to catch it in midair. I now have a small green rubber band around the top. It's isn't really there to hold the phone it's just a visual reminder to me to lock the phone in. No green no go. Here are some pics
7. Just a note that I still have 2 fork braces for mediate delivery if anyone's interested?? FORK BRACE
8. Its 7degrees C and the sun is shinning. So this morning I replaced the fork springs and took off the anti-dives and with the new brace it was a nice day to take a ride!! The bike preformed above expectations. Thanks to Condor's super brace and Skydoc's springs and anti-dive covers, this is going to be a good summer for ridding. Now, can any one tell me where I can get a supply of free time and gas money!!!!!
9. Not even sure if that is the correct term. What I mean is to be able to quickly go back to a thread of interest. I've been kicking around here for almost a year and I STILL haven't figured out how to "subscribe" to a particular thread. Brace yourself....I'm just about ready to start tearing into my 83 blonde! The flood of questions will soon start!
10. First, please forgive my PRIMITIVE art. I am still thinking on the fairing broken tab fix thing... Would this type of set up be possible. A strong brace with three holes, one attached to the bottom speaker bolt, the top one attached to the fairing METAL STRIP and then a second brace that a has a wing (T shaped) that fits FLAT against the fairing and held in place with JB Weld (the wing would give more surface area for the glue to hold). Once the glue has cured, this brace would then be attached to the first brace. This setup might provide a LOT of stability for the METAL STRIP and windshield. The braces would have to cut precisely (so as to not pull to much against the fairing), and also would involve some bending. Here is a VERY bad drawing and the 2nd brace does not show the WING I think would be best for securing it to the fairing. I see no reason to have it replaced if it just gonna break again. I would rather fix it for good. Comments, suggestions and SOME LAUGHTER is appreciated. Wally
11. Trust me, if you have a 2nd Gen, you DO have broken tabs on the inner fairing where the ends of the windshield bracket SHOULD be attached! Even if your bike is quite new, they are broken. Here is a picture of what the tabs should look like - I'm holding the broken back piece to show how it would look if it was actually there: I'm sure Yamahaha would replace the inner fairing under warranty for this, but frankly, I don't want them to rip my bike apart to do it when the new ones will just break in the first week anyway. The relatively easy solution is to make a brace that will run from the bottom screw on the speaker to the screw in the windshield bracket. When positioned correctly, this will clamp the windshield bracket against the tiny bit of the tab that remains and stop all motion. To start with, you will need a couple of metal straps - they cannot be too thick, but must be more sturdy than hardware tape. I found this bracket in the framing section of the hardware store and just cut the two pieces off: Put one end on the speaker screw and then cut the bracket to the exact length that will just fit under the top lip of the inner fairing. You will have to use a pair of pliers to twist and curve the strap to fit flush against the rubber grommet that holds the nut. The correct position for the windshield bracket is to have the metal piece behind the fairing tabs, and the front lip of the rubber grommet on the outside of the tab. Here are a couple of pictures of how it should be positioned: In other words, if the tab was still in one piece, it would slide over the groove in the rubber grommet on the outside of the metal windshield bracket. You will need to make sure the windshield bracket is properly positioned on the remaining piece of the tab before you can mark the correct position for the screw hole in the new brace. Here are pictures of the brace before I cut it to length, the finished brace before mounting, and then a couple of different shots of the brace all fastened in place. Once you have those new braces in place they work like clamps and everything is rock solid.
12. If you think you might be interested in a Fork Brace for your 1stGen, add your post to this thread. If I get enough interested folks on the list I'll go ahead and place another order instead of waiting around as planned until next spring. Just a note. I've been doing this fork brace thing for a couple of years now and at last count shipped over 150 braces. I do this for the members of this board, not for the general public. So if you want to be added to the list please be a supporting member. Thanks. Here's a link to the classified ad that has the info for cost and payment. 1. Prairiehammer PD/shipped 2. MikeZ06Allen 3. 13. I want to purchase a knee brace from a U.S. company: http://www.allegromedical.com, but they don't ship to Australia. Not responding to my emails after initial one saying no shipping to Oz. Can any one assist with purchase and shipping to me:confused24: I will paypal funds to cover all costs. Info for brace: Adjustable post-operative knee brace [long,cool22.5"] ID# 204562 $US129.63+shipping **Wish to also purchase extra leg strap if possible?
14. Way back last year we had a group buy on fork braces. To get the price break I had to buy 50 braces, and ended up only moving 20-25 to the group. Nothing like the first group buy where almost 70 were sold. Since then it's been one here and one there. I have four left with one's that's been spoken for. Only 3 are available. So.... anyone thinking about replacing their OEM brace shoot me a PM. Here's a link to the Classy ad. Once these are gone it's going to be a while before... if ever... there'll be another group buy.
15. Does anyone have some technical drawings of a fork brace for a first gen? I have a friend at a place in Ottawa here that would like to make me something interesting. I need a good fork brace so why not use state of the are metals!! I could give him the brace of my bike but that would stop the ridding and that would be crazy!
16. Alright, I'll throw this out here and see what peculates up. For the past couple of months my left elbow area has been acting up. Not sure if it is the joint or muscle. Clutching sucks and is painful. Picking a cup/sugarbowl of the cabinet shelf is uncomfortable at best and flexing my arm after having it in a steady position (like riding) for a while definitely gets my attention. I can't quit work (duh!), I can't switch hands, I've tried a tennis brace, auto clutch might be nice but won't make the problem go away , advil doesn't do anything and chiropractic adjustments don't help either. Anyone had this and what did you do to make it go away? Thanks!
17. We bought our '90 Venture about 8 weeks ago and have already ridden nearly 2000 miles on it. After reading many of the discussions here and getting more "in tune' with our bike, I decided to add the heavy fork brace and the Progressive fork springs to help cure the somewhat "flexy" feel in the front. Last Friday, I ordered both from the classified section here from the members posting them. I received the fork brace yesterday! all the way from California to here in Ohio. I just couldn't wait, so I installed it and went for a ride. What a difference! I began wondering if I needed the springs, but they are going to be installed before it is all over along with some new fork gaiters which are split in multiple places. Since the bike has only 12,000 miles on it and it spent a number of years on the center stand, the springs aren't that critical this week. One issue that I am puzzled by is the sound that is generated when I get the bike leaned over much more than about 70 degrees. There seems to be a bit of a "roar" from what I believe are the tires. It has Dunlop 404 tires on it at about 75% thst were mounted at the same time. Is this characteristic of these tires, or is there something else like a bearing bad? I don't have any experience with Dunlop street tires, all my other bikes have Avons on them. We are both extreemly pleased with this bike and want to have it in the stable for years to come so anything that might need to be addressed needs to be done soon. I appreciate the thoughts and wisdom of the group.
18. This morning I decided to make a brace for the lower leg by cutting down a wrap-around brace I had been given the first time the fixator came off. Asked Quickstep to cut down the metal plates than run through it...and Hey presto! made a shorter version. But would it work Asked Quickstep if he fancied a ride into Fremantle for a coffee, and he said why not! Sooooo............... YEEHAW: Took my first ride on the Quike since before Christmas. :dancefool: WOOF WOOF: Only a dog would understand the wind in the face feeling!! Riding the bike is the one thing I can do independently, and feel able bodied I'm a happy little venture rider.
19. Went to surgeon today and everything fusing together as it should. No more back brace and time to start therapy. Asked the Doc if I can ride the bike now. At first he said no, but I told him I don't ride a Harley, that I ride a bike like a Goldwing where I set straight up and have a back rest. He said OK. So soon as I get the bike back from Pennsylvania it will be riding time. :big-grin-emoticon:
20. Since spring is just around the corner I just wanted to remind 1stGen'rs, and let new members know, that I still have 1stGen performance fork braces available. The ad is buried in the classifieds, and here's the LINK. Super Brace gets $143.00 + shipping for theirs. Ours are $60/$70C. If that don't motivate ya nothing will..... http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/data/6/large/classified11.jpg
21. I am experiencing some vibration in the front wheel at high speeds (over 80) I have been told that is due to deflection in the forks. So, I am considering this fork brace (http://www.americanmotorcycleaccessories.com/proddetail.asp?prod=AMA1100) does anyone know how difficult they are to install? Thanks
22. Got out hospital last night because health care nurse was supposed to come over this morning and change dressing and teach me how to give myself shots. Found out I'm a full blown diabetic while I was in there. Well she finally called me around 1:00 today and asked me if I had everything for her to come out. I told her I was told she would have it. She told me I needed to have "all that crap" before she got there tonight at 8:00pm. So I quit taking my pain pills so they would where off, so I could drive to the RX and get all the "crap" I needed. Not supposed to drive but need shots and dressing changed. All these Michigan Women getting paid by Obama to go to school and do this stuff has HUGE attitudes. In the Hospital they would bring meals and set the tray against the wall and leave. I was strapped in a bed so I couldn't move so I couldn't move to get tray and eat. WASN'T THEIR JOB. So they would come get the FULL tray and leave. Nights was Ok they were real nurses and would help without asking but during the day it's full of people that have to work to get their F.I.A. checks but do not want to be there. Do I sound pi$$ed, YES. Doctors and RN's coming in and telling you what they need to do and the helpers leave you laying in your own blood and drainage for two days. THEN the infectious disease doctor coming in and lecturing you on keeping clean. Yes by all means let the goverment FIX health care. Oh that $1290.00 brace that took 1 1/2 months to get? They took one look and said thats not the right type and will not work. Now Physical therpy tried for over an hour and the brace would not work. They called a different company, the guy came in, measured, was back in the morning with the perfect brace. Of course medicade only pays for one brace every 5 years. Calling medicade in morning telling them about other brace and if other company won't give me my $389.00 co-pay back then a court we are a going. On the bright side I'm still alive, my balls a swollen up so big (they don't know why) I can't set on the crapper without pissing everywhere in the process. Now I'm going to take a hand full of Vicodin 750's and check out for awhile. Sorry for any discrepancy with my language or political connotations but I think health care was better when people were there because they wanted to be there instead of having to be there to get a government check. Skydoc, can't wait to see you, gotta ride. Rant done, time to go to la-la land. Thanks.....Karl
23. Well Medicare says they MUST give me my money back for the non-working back brace. Says it's in the contract to get paid by medicare they have to take back any and all equipment that is unable to be used as designed. Stayed very calm and polite every time I talked with the brace company, the surgeons office (who they blamed) and Hospital (who they blamed) and Medicare. Since the billing had not went through medicare yet they will also loose the balance of the $1290.00 medicare would of paid them. Medicare told me to take the brace back tomorrow and get a returned item receipt with payment. If they will not do this I'm to call medicare back from there and they will tell them again and will stop all payment to them for ALL medicare claims until they do. Does not pay to mess with Venture riders. Feel a whole lot better. $389.60 for the bike.
24. Got a call from Neurosurgeon and back surgery scheduled for November 2nd. So getting bike put up and everything else in order best I can to be ready. Will be in hospital 5-10 days and then months of wearing a huge fiberglass brace. Brace makes you feel like a fool it's so big you have to wear it over your clothes with only sweat pants and tee shirt under it. Will have to quit eating to pay all the co-pays. Seems anyone that sticks their head in the door and asks "how you doing" sends you a bill. Enough of this wish me luck.
25. I'm sorry if this is a old subject but after a lot of looking around on the site I've not seen a thing about Back Braces, I'm sure I'm not the only rider out there that has a lower back ache after a few hours in the saddle?? I have a VStar 1100 Silverado that I put a Ortho Gell Pad in the seat and it did help a little but still after a few hours and a couple of days later my lower back ached terrible! I purchaced a 03 RSV a few months ago and it is a lot more comfortable than the VStar!! I've been looking and sent Rick Butler a personal message asking about making my present seat more comfortable, I've also been checking out the lower back braces, the KoolBak Motorcycle brace has some pretty good reviews. I'm sure that some of you guys/gals have a suggestion or opinion?? I had a 86 Venture about 20 years ago and I didn't seem to have the problem then, but, I'm 20 years older!!:shock3:thanks in advance for any ideas.. Larry M
