Helmet stink

Recommended Posts

If you have ever found your helmet with a bad odor from sweat.

Or maybe someone wore your helmet and you don't care for there head lice.

You can do what I do and put your melon protector

In the dish washer on a short cycle (30 min) with about 1 oz of Shampoo.

Just use your strap and tie it around the bottom of the

bottom tray and use a safety pin to hold the rest of the strap so it won't lay on the heating element.

Just pull the helmet out after the last rinse cycle.

You don't need the heating element on to dry the thing.

The helmet comes out clean and fresh.

Just thought someone else might like to know how to clean one up.

Been doing it for years and never thought of posting it until

I had to clean mine tonight...................Ron

Lots of dishwashers will foam out the door causing a big mess when using a regular type of soap or shampoo in them as they create subs that gets forced out the door seals. If you do use shampoo, use it very sparingly and keep an eye on the dishwasher in case a leak starts.

now why would you put the whole helmet in the dishwasher if you can just pull the liner:think::stickpoke::innocent:

cleans the bugs off too!

You can also take it in the shower with you. Lather up the inside on the helmet with your shampoo, put it on your head and move it around. Rinse it out and let it dry.

I'd be afraid the temps inside a dishwasher could damage the styrofoam inside the helmet.

All those coverup products don't kill the bacteria or germs the bugs (flys) leave on the helmet.

Like I say I have been doing it for years and no foam outs.

I did have foam outs using liquid soap (dawn,Palmolive) but never shampoo.

Anyway uae the info or not its there and it works for me...........Ron

I normally replace my helmet every 5 or so years ... well, between 5 and 14 years. This post got me wondering ... I've never checked the inside of my helmet since I bought it and installed the speakers in it. It's a Bell Mag 8.

So out to the garage I goes. Grabbed my helmet and looked carefully at the inside ... helmet is 3 or 4 years old now and used a good number of miles in all seasons since I got it, still looks good, no grease, grime, no obvious wear, foam liner still springy and holding shape, no color fading. It's removable and washable but it's never been outta the helmet since I bought it. Then I sticks my nose in there and takes a big inhale ... neutral smell. I don't wear a rag nor would I consider wearing one.

I then I thought about the environment: the helmet sits on my bike unless it is on my head, in the garage when it's home otherwise it sits astraddle my handle bars. Standing back I saw no obvious signs of flys being attracted to it or other vermin crawling about or in it. I then offered it to my 3 dogs. I have heard that dogs will lick the salt build up on the inside of the helmet. Other than wanting to play fetch with it ... no licking. Finally got the helmet back from them ... no damage ...

So how often does everybody wash their helmets regardless of how it is done, washer/dishwasher/bucket/dogs ...

I used to wear a doo rag/welder's cap under my helmet, but quit because of sweating and the helmet slipping around on my gourd too much. I bought a new Arai helmet last year that fits much better than the old one.

Since then, I have not worn anything on my head under the helmet. Funny thing is my head doesn't sweat now and there's no irky sweat smell in the liner. I've never washed the liner, but I do check it after long rides (maybe I ought to wash it!).

SteveD & Ponch you have a good response to the question.

How often do you wash or clean your helmet liner.

Well I wash mine about 1 time a month or more in the summer.

Then again I put alot of miles on my bike and my helmet is

always on my head.

I ride pretty much year round. (weather permitting)

After posting this and reading the posts it dawned on me that I was

looking at it from my perspective and not others.

I know guys who ride less then 500 miles a year and think there really riding.

Then they really do not need to wash or clean it out.

They just need to buy a new helmet every 10 years or so and

polish there driveway jewlery and set the helmet on the seat.

Where as I put on about 600 miles a week and sometimes more.

So I have alot more hours in my helmet then others do. I also sweat alot

and my helmet gets its share of bugs and oils both road and body.

Washing the helmet liner (I can not remove mine from the helmet)

has always worked for me and using shampoo really has made a great

difference in how long the liner last as well as making it fresh smelling.

I have tried other soaps over the years but shampoo seems the best.(for me anyway)

I thought this might help someone else out and I am sure it will................Ron

Hey Ron, if my post upset you, I apologize. I guess if I put more miles on like you I would need to clean mine more often. It was meant in jest.

I wish I could that is good stuff. I forgot there is a anti microbial formula that kills bacteria as well.My job is the reason I got my Venture Royale to ride back and forth to work .It will save me some money i think until I start buying goodies for it.My wife loves the way I smell when I come home from work.

I don't know if this works or not, but I've heard to rid tennis shoes of stink you put them in a plastic bag and overnight them in the freezer! Should work on helmet stink also. There is a product on the net, I think its called- What Odor- Saw it on one of Billy Mase infomercials WhatOdor.com :2cents:

Febreeze is the answer! I spray my helmet with a quick shot every time I wear it. No smell, I use the "baby powder" scent. Cheap, less than 2 bucks at WalMart, same can been using for over a year.

There are 2 formulas of Febreze that kill bacteria one of course is the ANTI BACTERIAL formula and the other is Febreze Sport .Both of these formulas kill bacteria and how do I know this I make Febreze for a living.

Yep, and no matter what the naysayers have to say, I like it. No flys, no gnats, no dogs trying to lick the lining out of it.

You keep making it, I'll need another can pretty soon!

Another easy stink-fix is using 'Duster.' You know, the stuff that you're supposed to use to blow debris out of your computer keyboard, but instead you run around with the can upside-down, freezing everything in sight...:whistling:

Turn the can upside-down, and spray the crap out of the inside of your helmet. Let it sit for a minute or two so it thaws out, and you're good to go.

I learned this trick at work. My work shoes don't 'breathe' at all, so they start smelling some kinda raunchy after a few weeks. I tried it on my helmet, and it works.

I would try the dishwasher thing if my wife wasn't there to witness it, or the kids wouldn't tell on me. Not to mention, I don't like spots on my helmet. ;)

For bug removal, I just put a few wet paper towels over the helmet and leave them for an hour. Come back, and they wipe right off.
