Another part of the story is that when the 'Max was launched in '84 / '85 it was proposed by the press to see it could live up to the advertising 'hype' and so a grudge match was arranged between a stock 'Max and the worlds fasted accelerating production car at the time, the Shelby Cobra 427. The stock Vmax whipped the Cobra by 1 full second over the quarter mile and went into the record books. The Gen I 'Max can still give a good account of itself today, 30 years after it was first launched.
