Project Ace Venture-a

Hey everybody! I just picked up a 1986 Yamaha Venture Royale that's been sitting since 2007. It looks a little rough around the edges but it looks like something I can get going again :)

 

 

I am figuring that I'll need to check/replace any rubber lines/hoses, rebuild calipers, rebuild carburetors, clean, clean some more, clean even more, and do some more cleaning, replace the hilarious fuse block, get some tires, and just try and get it back into good shape.

 

 

Advice and suggestions are welcome!

We are here to offer advice whenever you need it! As for the carbs, there is an excellent video out on how to rebuild and set up the carbs properly. It is for VMax carbs but ours are the same thing just jetted a little different and the choke linkage is different. It can be found on ebay occasionally...

 

I have a copy of this video. Get that bike running for this summer and come on out and meet some of the WNY members and come to the big regional rally this August!

Hey again folks! Got the bike in my shop and starting to go over it. One question I have is this, where can I get Carb Rebuild Kits, Master Cylinder Kits (carb and clutch), Clutch Slave Kit, and Caliper Rebuild Kits? Maybe that's more than one question... anyways I'm gonna poke around for a while to see if I can find some, but I am having a hard time.

Don't jump right into carb rebuild on these things. Do a good cleaning 1st and see what you got Mix a can of BerryMan's Chen Tech With some Marvel Mystery oil and give it a carb fillup from back of fuel pump and leave sit for a day or couple then see what you got. It will clean carbs and fuel pump.

No Carb kits available but you might check with MiCarl or Skydoc_17 to see what they have. Same with rebuild kits or try ebay. If you rebuild them try to hone out the cylinders as one of the main problems is the bores will have corrosion and uneven areas. Honing the cylinders fixes that.

Thanks! Skydoc_17 messaged me just before I read this! You all are on top of things here :) Thanks for the tip on honing - I'll have to add that to my list of resurrection tips.

I have brought back several that have sat for extended periods with a good cleaning. Nothing beats a good rebuild if you are good with carbs but I hate tearing into those things.

 

I've actually had little luck with carbs :( But I'd be okay with leaving all 4 connected and removing the bowls and slides and doing a good cleanout. If they need too much work, I'd rather just send them to someone.

Resilient, I also can understand the road you are about to travel with this machine. Mine was a little worse for wear when I started and with plastic repairs and my being fussy I opted to go for a full repaint to make my bike suit my taste. You are at the stage where you can set your own limits with it. First see what you have to work with then set you budget. Most likely you will break your budget but if you are like me the bike will progress nicer and nicer. I personally am so fussy I ordered the lettering for the controls.. lol... Any how, I love seeing people work or rebuild their projects rather than "buy " their way into riding. I look forward to reading your updates and results and or customization/personalization of the bike. Lots of members on this forum are good to deal with and educated in the ways of the venture, and are like part of a family. As a last thought that has crossed my mind a small piece of advice that might be beneficial to you. After looking over my bike to see my needs, I personally used the search function and researched old posts of upgrades that others had done. I ended up upgrading rather than rebuilding many of the original components, for example I went with R1 caliper rather than rebuilding the originals it was cheaper and suited my needs better. Cleaning is going to keep you busy for a while. Mothers Back to Black on that dash and the rest of the black plastic. Turtle wax Chrome Polish still great stuff for the metal and cheap. Buy a couple cans.

 

Thanks for those tips Yammer Dan! I'd never even heard of "Back to Black" before - that will be most useful on those black plastics :)

After looking over my bike to see my needs, I personally used the search function and researched old posts of upgrades that others had done. I ended up upgrading rather than rebuilding many of the original components, for example I went with R1 caliper rather than rebuilding the originals it was cheaper and suited my needs better. Good luck we are pulling for you and as Red Green says "keep your stick on the ice"

 

I've been doing the same thing :) I'm also thinking about doing the R1/R6 caliper upgrade! I also like the mod some people have done to move the trunk up and back - since I have a Corbin seat, it would make it more usable. The backrest sticks out 2" over the seat. I've also got to do some searching about a good replacement for some of the labels on the controls - several of them have worn off or faded away.

Again I am being educated by this forum, I had no idea they had a kit to move the rear trunk. Another member of this forum mentioned the idea of moving mine when he came to see me and the thought does come and go for the comfort of my passenger but I thought it would have been something I had to make up. If there is a pic available of one please post it as I would like to see what I am missing. Yammer Dan if you sell to Resilient please would you grab a pic so I can educate myself further? Had I known I might of looked for one earlier. If Yammer Dan can't grab a pic and you come across one Resilient will you do me the same favor of sending me a pic? I am really interested in this option now. Inquiring minds would like to know.
