View Full Version : goodbye rk mufflers 4ever??
:fiddle:I must be getting old,HA!!! Anyway goodbye to the rk mufflers "overrated?" I have tried them all rk screaming eagle , stock 09 ultra mufflers, older rk mufflers and i came to the conclusion that they don,t sound that good. this hi revving v4 should sound like a ferarri not a john deere. Is there any pipes that make it sound mellower and not raspy ? I am going to put the stocks back on this week "glad i kept them" and never look back. Kinda felt sorry for all the folks i passed having to listen to that !!

I have straight pipes on mine and sounds like a v-8. I did weld in Harley baffles on the ends of the pipes so my wife would ride with me.

Might know someone that will take them off your hands. For sale? Straight cut or slash?

i put these pipes on about one year ago and i am extremely pleased with the sound. removable baffles come w/ the mufflers (take 5 minutes to put on/take off). you pick the baffle you like from mild to wild and if you really want loud just pull out the baffles....guaranteed to turn alot of heads.

Yep me too, nice mellow rumble, and they seem to sound better the longer you run them! I'll keep mine:thumbsup: Craig

My Screaming Eagles are tame in loudness but rich in throatiness, however when I want to be naughty then I toss on the Larossa pipes and toss in some ear plugs.. now THOSE will break windows.. heheh
I got like new set of RK mufflers in my deal when I sold the First Gen. I hope to be putting them on my Second Gen soon.... :thumbsup2:

Yeah I like them too, they do have a nice deep sound to them but my RK's are cheaper unless someone gave you the bubs..

Hey if you want to get rid of some of the pipes let me know I might take them off your hands. I have a set of RK pipes I just dont have the mounts or have had the time to drill the guts out of them yet.

I can't wait to get mine on. Do I need another set of brackets for these?
It will take adapter brackets, as the R/K brackets are well aft of the RSV mounting holes. One of the POs put R/K up slash mufflers on mine, but just welded tabs on the braces under the saddlebags. Another approach (suggested by Squidley) is to use the proper size rubber lined electrical conduit "P" clamp.

Oh well...
I got my new (cheap, cheap) RKs and the brackets a year ago, but haven't taken the time to put them on.
With all of this discussion, my interest is up again. I guess I at least gotta install them and try them out now.
With my long weekend starting in a few hours, I will several days to do some testing. :big-grin-emoticon:

I like my roadhouse pipes. Not too loud but sound good, not raspy.

I also dumped the RK muffs in favor of the stock muffs. On a long trip that sound wears you down. I grew up with Harleys - parent's rode full-dressers in the '50's and 60's. The sound of that Harley V-twin is imprinted on me. Maybe that's why, at least to me, putting louder pipes on my Yamaha V-4 just seems to scream "I wanna be a Harley" especially to Harley riders (especially since the 2nd Gen design borrowed so much from Harley's full-dresser). I have no problem with whatever muffs other Venture owners install.

I just purchased a pair of LA Choppers Oval Bag Slip-on Mufflers and I am waiting for them to come in, Does anyone know how these pipes sound? My bike is a 2005 with 4,500 miles, I bought it last year with 1,600 miles. I wanted a little more sound. I had a 2002 HD Sportster before this (what a difference in bikes). I noticed there really isnt much after market accessories for these bike.

Ordered my Roadhouse pipes today , I'm going on pure gut instinct that they are the sound I want. My bubs were too loud , my stock was too quiet, I hope these will be juuuuuuuuuuusssssssssssssst right.

on my 07 RSV I drilled out the stock mufflers.
gave it - i thought - a great deep sound.
on my sons RSTD we installed RK - stage 2 (basically the same as drilled RSV).
and they sounded pretty good.
one morning, as i headed to work, i thought the bike sounded different...
yup - overnight then dang boy had swapped mufflers!!!!!!
he LOVED the drilled RSV sound.
a few months later he installed Bubs on the RSV. not bad. had them for 60k miles now.
still miss the drilled / stock RSV ones... unfortuantly son totaled his scoot (no harm to him) and we didn't get a chance to recover the mufflers..
anyway -- just my rambling on..... and on ... and on.....

I like the Road King best thing I have done on the Venture in the 4 years.

Are you drilling them out or leaving them stock?

For the low rumble sound I like the Bubs. The Barons 4-2-4 sound awesome but are too loud for my liking.
Now those Wild Pigs, those have peaked my interest. Although I have not heard a RoadHouse in person, I really liked the sound. That sound comes with a hefty price tag.

It's a personnel thing I guess. I have Road King slash cut mufflers on both my Ventures and I get compliments all the time on how good they sound. I have BUB on my Road Star and they are pretty loud. I get a lot of compliments on how good they sound also. When I'm riding they don't sound that good to me. The only thing I can figure is because I'm sitting in front of the mufflers and accelerating away from the sound. I know a lot of people disagree with me on this point but I don't think a 4 cylinder sounds good if it is to loud. Just my opinion. I get compliments from Honda and Yamaha riders but of course a HD rider is not going to admit it sounds good but they will comment on the fact that they are HD mufflers.
:guitarist 2:stockers are back on, the carbs are synched and it runs better than ever... quiet too..
