View Full Version : Replacing sealed beam passing lamps with halogen?

After reading here about ignition switch failures I was motivated to tear into the fairing and rewire my headlight and passing lamps to a relay and while at it I changed out the headlight bulb to a Silverstar Ultra. The light is bright but now I don't like the color of the passing lamp light. They are sealed beam bulbs so I can't just replace them with Silverstar H3's. Anyone have any suggestion on replacements? Can I pop the bezel and lamps from a Vstar halogen set into my existing housings or do I have to replace the entire housing? Any other aftermarket options out there?
Thanks,
Dennis
Hey Dennis,
I did some searching for a 4.5 inch driving light to see what could possibly be used with halogen lights, and I found the one listed below.
However, in my thoughts, you might be able to purchase two replacement Lenses from them and not have to purchase the entire light bar assembly, and install just the lenses in your stock housings so that you can use the halogen bulb.
Here is a link to see what I am talking about:
Please deal carefully with x choppers, for I have heard some bad remarks..

You might be able to call them to see if you can purchase just a replacement lens..?
I would also think your light bar wiring terminal ends will need to be changed to adapt to the halogen bulb terminal ends.

You might be able to take this type apart and use the lens out of it..?

Here is a sealed beam replacement halogen for $15:

There have been several discussion on the sealed beam passing lamps on this forum. Do a search for PAR36 which is the lamp type. Kitesquid seems to be compiling a list of PAR36 lamps.
I think the sealed beams may actually be better and less expensive than the H3 bulbs which is what I have.

Thanks for the input. I saw the JP cycles lamps but I was concerned that they seemed more like a flood bulb instead of a focused pattern. My idea was to get to a H3 type bulb so I could match the color temperature of the Silverstar.
Will these work (Halogen version)? http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/accessories/acscitemdetail/5/19/95/436/all/1/2557/0/detail.aspx
Or these even though it says not for Venture? http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/accessories/acscitemdetail/5/19/95/436/all/1/3939/0/detail.aspx

Adjure 4.5 inch lights work perfect with the Yamaha cans. I use the wave cut but they have others.

Try this;

I didn't wanna wait so I went to AutoZone. I ended up paying about $26.00 for the single pack. If this lasts as long as it is hyped up to, I didn't need the double pack.

Be sure to order lenses for a Venture if buying from Yamaha. I ordered Halogen lenses for a RSTD and they would not fit the Venture buckets. If I had it to do over, I would go with Adjure.

There are may halgon, sealed beam lamps on the market.
it depends on the beam shape, color tempautere and light output you are looking for...
I did post a thread that has a LOT of information on PAR 36 lamps, but I cant find it with a search......

Friends,
Noticed that the SilverStar Ultra 9003 SU BP mentioned in the above threads is different from the bulb I recently bought, the bulb I have get'n ready get installed is a SilverStar 9003/HB2ST. DO I HAVE THE CORRECT ONE? Or go back to the store and get the Ultra??
Looking forward to hearing from you!

I kinda lucked out on my setup. When I was doing the passing light install, me and my best friend noticed that the lamps were sealed beam :(. He had an idea of using his father-in-law's "guts" from the passing lamps he has on his VTX (he had replaced the guts with red and blue LEDs, as it is his escort bike). Worked like a champ...later replaced the stock Honda H3s with Silver Stars...light up the road quite well :happy34:

Just installed my new halogen lights from Adjure. Wow, what a deal for $20. They are bright. All I had to do was change the terminal ends on the wires inside the housing and they fit right in place. I'll post a photo whenever it clears up and I can get the bike out of the garage.

Heck...I don't know that I really needed them but at that price, I just ordered a set anyway. :)

I just put a pair of H3's on both Krome Roses Intruder and My RSV this Summer but I think these look sharp so I ordered us each a pair.
On the ones I installed this Summer I upgraded to the Sylvania H3-55 Watt and they make a ton of difference.
I'm thinking with the facet cut of these lenses that they will be seen easily but maybe not light up the road as well as clear lenses.

Dennis,
Glad to hear they fit! My son tells me mine have come in, but I'm still in Houston, enjoying a maintenance day, or maybe week, for blown head gasket on my motor home.

Mine came in also. I haven't installed them yet but I really like the way they look. Great deal and I appreciate the post about them. I may somebody add a matching headlight but I know it will take some extra work.

Do they make a Matching one? I've look at the site and didn't see one.

No, I don't think so. These "facet" cut are discontinued so they probably used to. Maybe able to find something close enough though. If not, no big deal.

Be careful when you install the lights. I cracked one of mine by overtightening the bezel around it. Had to order another set.

Wow, I just saw this thread - I was reasonably happy with my stock driving lights, but couldn't pass up this deal either! Ordered three sets - $12 shipping seemed pretty high, but it was the same cost for three sets as one, so I figured maybe I'd sell the other two sets locally to offset the shipping.
Great advice on not cracking the lens too, THANX for posting that! I'll bet that is why these have been discontinued. Gonna have to be careful . . .

Bought these and they cracked first time I tried to tighten the screw for the houing. They also seems to have a "funny" look to them when the light is own.
