View Full Version : Freebird's Maintenance Day 2010
Freebird
10-14-2009, 06:38 PM
Freebird's Annual Maintenance day is held every year in Oberlin, OH. I think that this will be the 6th annual event but I don't know for sure. I think that we had close to 200 members attend last year and I expect more this year. The official day is June 19th which is a Saturday. People generally start pulling in on Friday though and many make a weekend of it and don't leave until Sunday. The official hotel is the Oberlin Inn in Oberlin, OH but it is not a huge hotel and we fill it up pretty quickly. Other hotels used by our members are the Motel 6 and the Super 8 both about 14 miles away in Amherst, OH. Some folks prefer to camp and most do so here at my house. I have plenty of room here for those that wish to pitch their tents. I also have a fire ring out by the pond where many camp and also one in the back yard. There will be firewood if you want a fire and there is a gas grill on the rear deck if anybody wants to cook on Friday or Saturday nights. Many who arrive on Fridays go out to dinner somewhere on Friday evening.
Here are the phone numbers for the mentioned hotels. The Oberlin is the closest but I think also the most expensive. They do give us a special rate though so be sure to tell them that you are with the VentureRiders.
Oberlin Inn - 440-775-1111

Motel 6 - 440-988-3266

Super 8 - 440-323-7488
http://www.super8.com/Super8/control...false&tab=tab1 (http://www.super8.com/Super8/control/Booking/check_avail?areaCode=11P9&brandCode=SE,RA,MQ,HJ,TL,DI,KG,BU,BH,MT&searchWithinMiles=25&areaType=1&destination=Amherst&state=OH&country=US&checkInDate=05/09&numberAdults=1&numberRooms=1&checkOutDate=05/10&numberChildren=0&numberBigChildren=0&rate=000&useWRPoints=false&variant=&id=05878&propBrandId=SE&force_nostay=false&tab=tab1)
I cater food for a lunch on Saturday. That will usually include chicken, roast beef, cole slaw, baked beans, french fries and etc. Menu is subject to change but it will be something like that. There is no fixed fee for the even or the food but there will be a donation can out for those who wish to help.
I call it maintenance day because a good part of the day on Saturday is spent doing minor maintenance jobs on our bikes. Tuneups, carb syncs, installation of accessories, oil changes, anything within reason that we can get done in 4 or 5 hours. This year we would like to have such things wrapped up by 3 or 4 PM so that we can spend some time visiting. Some like to go for a group ride on Saturday evening and some prefer to just hand around here and visit. The choice is yours.
Please go to the calendar and RSVP if you plan to attend. It really helps me to know how much food to order if I have some guestimate on how many people will be here. Follow this link to the calendar to add your name please.

I'm planning on coming with the wifey, but was thinking maybe I should ask 2 of my riding buddies. One rides a V Star, and the other rides a (gulp !) Suzuki Boulevard.
I don't know if it'd be appropriate to ask them or not.
Maybe Oberlin will be the next Sturgis....lol.

I would LOVE to see this thing grow even bigger this year. I think I had right around 200 folks at the house last year. Let's shoot for 300 this year. :)
I am also pleased to announce that we will have a couple of great vendors here again this year. Bill Morphy from Mic Mutes has told me that he will be coming again so it's a GREAT time to add the Mic Mutes to your bike if you have been thinking about doing so. If you haven't been thinking about it, you should be as it's a GREAT modification. Rick Butler will also be here again. He is bringing his wife this year and will not be working daylight til dark this time but will consider doing just a few seats this time so if you want Rick to work his magic on your seat, you should contact him and make an appointment soon.
I also plan to contact at least a couple of other vendors to see if they would be interested in coming. I will extend the invitation to Edsets has he has expressed a desire to come but unfortunately, often can't get away from business to do so. Hopefully he can work it out this year though.
Would love to find a pinstriped to be on hand. I tried last year and it didn't work out but will give it another shot.
Of course the new VentureRider mascot, Annie the Wonderdog, will be present so those of you who met her at The Hub last year will get to say hello again. :)

Old Hippy and I will be there. Staying at the wonderful Oberlin Inn. If anyone is in doubt. they take excellent care of us. We get to park our bikes on a concrete pad under a roof. They even extra security that weekend for our scoots. They have always been extremely helpful and always want to know what the schedule is for the next year. They have a bar and a restaurant. Good people just like all of us.

Hey Don,
Since I screwed up 2 years ago and sent you the wrong Pittsburg Hot Links, would you be interested in trying it again? I could ride down to Pittsburg and stop in at the Pittsburg Hot Links Restaurant (http://www.pittsburghotlink.com/) and pick up a real batch of hot links? I would just need to know which links you want:
http://www.pittsburghotlinks.net/Home_Page.html
Since I'm bringing a trailer this year, it wouldn't be a problem bringing up a batch for you to grill on the Barbie for the folks.
Oh, you didn't bring home that mangy mutt from the Hub last year did you? No Don, I'm just kidding. If you did, Linda and I are very proud of you and Eileen and we will be looking forward to seeing her again.
I'm serious about the Hot Links,
Rick
Freebird
02-04-2010, 06:46 AM
OK....first to answer the question about the mutt...yes....within a week after we got home from our trip, Eileen got in the car and drove back to Arkansas to pick her up. I was really shocked that she wanted that dog so bad because she had never really been a dog person. She sure fell in love with that one though.
As for the hot links. I'll get back to you on that. We may end up going to Texas for a family visit before Maintenance Day and if so, I can bring them back myself. I'll try to figure out if that is going to happen in the very near future. They won't have to be grilled though as you would buy them pre-cooked and they just have to be warmed up in the oven. They can be grilled but it's not easy. Those things have so much grease in them that they really burn and explode if you try to grill them. :)
The fact that you don't know exactly what they are continues to bother me. I know that you weren't born in Texas but you have lived there so long that I honestly had come to think of you as a REAL Texan. I'm now starting to question your Texas citizenship. I've tried to look the other way regarding this issue but will admit that I'm really struggling as to whether or not you should be reported. :whistling:

The wife and I are planning on being there. Barring something out of my control we are comming. So if the good lord willing and the work holds out( gotta have some money) the plans are set. Oh yeah we plan on pitching a tent for a day or to. Plan to be there Fri. and leave sat. or sun depending on the next ride. Aamcotrans has posted that he wants to do a ride down the blue ridge and camp for a week or so. Its on our way home and the wife and I have come to really like Rob and Clare.

Don: Let us know if you need donations for the outhouse...food...whatever you need. This is gonna be BIG!!!! T Shirts would be nice too. Definitely counting the days....thank goodness we are not MD VIRGINS, HAHA. No telling what happens to them.

:confused07:Is he still coming? If so, what is a ball park figure cost for pin stripping on a Venture? Will he take credit cards? Do I have to bring cash? :mo money:How many can he do in a day? Is there a sign up list? Really would like to have this done while I am there.:biker:

Jaybird has been to many of my poker runs and depending on how involved your striping is will determine how many he can do in a day. Just guessing, I'd say it takes 30 to 45 minutes to do a bike. It took him about an hour to do mine but I had a lot done and it was in 2 different places.
