Can the front brake pads be checked without taking the calipers off or apart? I don't know exactly what I am looking at or for. Is there a measuremet that would indicate the pads need replacement?
Thanks,
Jim

You can visually see part of the pad from the top and bottom of caliper. As long as you can see pad ( brake material ) between rotor and backing plate of pad you should be ok ? The pads are around 3/16 thick when new. My opinion hope this helps.

They usually have a strip of missing material in the center. When it wears down close to being even with that strip they need to be replaced.

If they are over 50 percent worn, order new one's and keep them on hand ready to install. I always have a spare set in the tool box.
15 to 20 K is about average life span for front pads. also, don't expect both sides to be worn the same amount. That depends on how you use your brakes.
