Good for you Kitesquid! I find those types of DVD's very informative but after youve seen them a few times they just sit on your shelf. I decided to do some house cleaning myself and have I have handed my copy of Ride like a Pro IV off to Rocket when he was here last night and he agrees to send it on when he is done with it.
He was kinda wiped out when he got here late last night from Grandpagaks place in LaPorte MN, but he made it fine.

In the original intent of Kite's offer, shipping will be paid by the shipper. This saves the hassle of sending and cashing small checks, waiting for the mail, etc. when it is only a couple of bucks. This also allows us to 'pay it forward'.

Good for you Kitesquid! I find those types of DVD's very informative but after you’ve seen them a few times they just sit on your shelf.
I beg to differ. I watch my RLAP V video at least once a month. To keep my mind focused on SAFETY while riding. I know that I can ALWAYS learn something from a training video even if I have seen it 100 times!!!!!!!!!!
The reason I gave away my RLAP IV video is I now have RLAP V. which now brings up the next question:
So what is on V that isn't on IV?
NOTHING major. Jerry does point out “the dip” and I like the teaching style a little better. If you have RLAP IV you don’t need RLAP V, but the learning experience for me was better when viewing RLAP V.
In a few scenes in RLAP IV, there is some stuff going on in the background that detract from the teaching and the whole good cop/bad cop thing gets OLD quick…. It was not required for the training. I think it was added for comedic relief, but IMHO it detracts from the overall production.
I decided to do some house cleaning myself and have I have handed my copy of Ride like a Pro IV off to Rocket when he was here last night and he agrees to send it on when he is done with it.
WOOOO HOOOOO!!!! So now we have TWO copies of this DVD to view!!! THANKS to friesman1.
I will list who has the DVDs here:
RedRider
Rocket
And who is in line to receive them here. First come, First Served. I do note that there are now some requests from Canada and sense I do not know how much it costs to ship it over the border, if the current holder does not want to incur the cost of shipping over the border, they do not have to… BUT if you want to, that is OK by me as it is no longer my DVD...

I can start sending it out in a week. I will send it to first person and expect it to be forwarded from there. Your cost to get it them would be just your cost for sending it to the next person.

Hey gentlemen (and any ladies who bought into this thread.)
When the DVD has finished doing the rounds of the North American continent in around 8 years time, there are few Aussies who I feel sure would love to have a look at it.
It wouldn't take long for it to circulate amongst the few interested Aussie members, then kick it back upstairs.
Just wondering if it's compatible with our DVD system down-under? Most of them are these days.

We use NTSC format in North America and most of the rest of the world uses PAL format for DVD and vhs recordings. If youre using NTSC (check on the back of any dvd cover that works in your player) you would be ok,but, if youre PAL (and I think you may be) it wont work in most of your players, there is a small percentage that do play both formats but the numbers of those players used are very small.

Remember to please post something you learned from the video.
I have a question for those of you who have viewed it: Did you go buy your own copy of RLAP V? Don't forget to ask for your VentureRider forum discount.
And again, I am not connected with RLAP, I just want my fellow bikers to have a long and healthy life on two wheels and anyway that we all can learn to ride safely is a good thing!!!!!!

I learned how to drag the rear brake in low speed maneuvering. this helps me to keep my hand off of the front brake and it also helps me to make tighter corners.
It reinforced what I learned in the MSF courses to point my head and eyes where I want to go. Where I look is were the bike goes.
DON'T foot drag!!!
That ANYBODY who can ride a bike can ride it well IF they practice controlling it at low speeds. What you practice at low speeds is how you react at high speeds.
I fell that I have better control of my bike by practicing the techniques shown in RLAP.
I want to thank Jerry "Motorman" Palladino for producing these DVDs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Safety is PARAMOUNT, if you want a long an healthy life. IF I practice the ideas in this DVD I will have a happier motorcycling experience!

Kingsizer should have the DVD on Tuesday. Thanks for letting me view it.
My biggest learning was the use of the rear brake in tight slow speed turns. I have taken FEET off my turns! Now I just have to continue practicing until it becomes second nature. Thanks again.

I would greatly appreciate the use of this DVD for a short viewing period when you have completed your viewing. My wife is about to start riding her own bike, and I feel that this will greatly assist her in her venture.
Thanks
Randy
BTW, the RLAP people have a different video for those staring to learn to ride. I have not viewed it.....yet.
It is called Learn to ride the easy way.

I was just wondering if you are going to start a Aussie list. I know it is early but as the last on the Canadian list (for now) and more than willing to ship to the land down under it would be nice to know who to ship to. Is it that we are waiting to find out if their equipment is comatable with our DVDs? :D

Maybe send spear a msg and find out if he has an ntsc player. Most in that area of the world would be PAL format and wont play the DVD.

There is an Ausie List. It contains one name: spear
We are still waiting for feedback from down-under if NTSC is playable on their equipment as the standard there is PAL.
Maybe he could play it on his PC, or game console like a PS2 or PS3, but it would have to be NTSC compatible.......

Ok, after viewing a few segments of the video, finding an empty shopping ctr parking lot, and practicing the meneuvers I'm now able to (with confidence) perform the circle completely locked out. In both directions
It did take me approx 1.5 hours to get the meneuver down pat though.. Also I'm running on ME 880's and in the beggining, it seemed like my tires were not tracking well. I checked the air pressure and sure enough they both were low. After making that correction, it was much easier to accomplish my goal.. So CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURE !!
This video should be in every bikers collection  RLAP ver. 5

Also that was a great tip for picking the bike up using soft ties tied to the lowest part of the bike possible.
Practise the friction zone and lean limit.
It is amazing watching those folks toss around those bikes like toys!

Please take me off the mailing list for the ride like a pro dvd. My wife has purchased one for me as a present, saying I can use all the help I can get!! If anybody wants to drop a hint to their copilot the web site is www.ridelikeapro.com (http://www.ridelikeapro.com) ! Thanks for taking on this project Harold, I appreciated it!

I have sent the RLAP 5 DVD to gunkylump.
The thing that surprised me the most on the DVD was applying a little rear brake and a bit of power to the rear wheel will tend to hold the bike upright.
I think I am going to buy a copy for myself because I won't remember enough of it come spring.

I got my Ride like a PRO V today it is complete in that you don't need to have 1-4. I don't know why I waited so long to order my own copy. I do think its a very good thing that there is the one here on the list that's being passed around. After looking at the copy I got today if there is anyway you can get one for yourself, it will pay you back with the Information in it buy being able to go back and look at from time to time so you can get sharp on the items it teaches.
Again Thanks for having the list.

GREAT!! now that you have your own copy, please feel free to post something about what you learned from the DVD!!!!!!
I too agree that it is worth more than the cost!!!!!!!!!!!
If it saves me one accident or allows me to U-Turn properly (no foot dragging) then it has MORE than paid for itself!!!!!
The Motorman has produced a GREAT training video!!!!!!!

Two ways.
you can get on the list to receive a copy that is being mailed around the county that either Friesman1, jburrell or KiteSquid gave away. This might take a while.
OR if you cant wait MONTHS to receive the copy above, you can click HERE (http://www.ridelikeapro.com/html/dvds/RLAP5.htm) and order a copy. if you tell them you are a member a VetureRider.com forum they will discount it....
I recommend buying a copy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, once you have viewed it, please post back to this thread what you have learned!!!!!!!
Please take me off the list, I got a copy a while back and forgot to tell.

GREAT!!!!!
Can you look in the owners manual to see what Yamaha says the minimum turing radius is for the 1st gen? That would be my goal (or probally a foot or two larger as I am a little chicken still.... I need more practice)
BTW as sugessted in one of the DVDs, I went to my local big box store to purchase one dozen tennis balls. Once I returnd home, I cut them in half. Now all I have two dozen very short high visibility cones that I'm not worried about running over with my motorcycle while practicing the techniques taught on these wonderful training videos. Woo Hoo, now I just have to wait for some warm and dry weather to go practice.

The owners manual is at 114 inches that's 9.5 feet. I think to do 9.5 feet you would have to walk her around cause that's at the lock. I have the bags trunk and fairing off right now getting ready to do a new paint job on the Ol girl so she can be ready for spring and the and I hope it helps with the (need) or want of a new bike. I went to good will and got a leather coat for 5.00 cut it into strips about 6 inches wide and wrapped the engine guard and other places that would hit if I dropped it
and tried the U- turn and pulled it off in the driveway 12foot. :clap2: I can make them to the Left with out putting a foot down but I need more to make a U-turn to the right got to work on my right U-turns. My slow ride is 150 foot takes 2.5 min.it's a real workout holding a line and going so slow. I live about a hundred yards from the National Guard building and they have a large parking lot and I go there and set up and I have since found out that DMV brings people there for parallel parking and motorcycle testing is also done there. I have made new friends with the city and state cops. I live in a small town in western Oklahoma and while I was running the course the Guy with DMV giving a parking test saw me and came back after he was done with driver test and we talked a bit he rides.

Good idea, but that does not allow much time to learn from it, especially in the winter when PRACTICE time is rare.
To view it quicker there is a $34.95 alternative. Click HERE (http://www.ridelikeapro.com/html/dvds/RLAP5.htm) to find out more. Be sure to ask for the VentureRider Forum discount.

Thanks for the comments.
Have you looked at a book called Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well by David L. Hough?
It has a LOT more tips on how to survive on the roads especially how to look for hazards ahead.

Please put me on the list. I am always up for more learning. It just might save my B--.:yikes:

Hey gentlemen (and any ladies who bought into this thread.)
When the DVD has finished doing the rounds of the North American continent in around 8 years time, there are few Aussies who I feel sure would love to have a look at it.
It wouldn't take long for it to circulate amongst the few interested Aussie members, then kick it back upstairs.
Just wondering if it's compatible with our DVD system down-under? Most of them are these days.

OK but please post what you learned!!!!!!
Well, I came away with much. I am glad I took the physical class, because having a live coach there diagnosing what I was doing wrong, and encouraging me, was invaluable. Too, practicing with three or four other bikes kept the energy up. That's my plug for the class. :)
As far as the material itself, I learned that keeping the RPMs going in the engine was key. Most of the times that I failed was due to coasting and letting the bike's momentum drop. Then the bike would dive into the turn and that was it. When I kept up the RPMs, all I had to do was let out the clutch 1/16" and the bike would come back up and I could regain control. It was a miracle! LOL
I also learned that I needed to be less afraid of "violent" lock-to-lock maneuvers. To accomplish the weave, for example, I had to lock the bars far left, then throw them far right. That was even more true in the Figure 8. Pktexas (http://www.venturerider.org/forum/member.php?u=6407) took the class with me. He had risers on his Venture that reduced the lock-to-lock travel, making his turning radius that much bigger, and he had a harder time doing the maneuvers as a result.
Oh, and I learned that using tennis balls as markers is fine, but when you used curb-height cones on top, the failure rate went way up. :(
With this basic technique the teach, I know I can do U-turns in 22'. I'll keep practicing so that I can reduce that further.

Oh, and I learned that using tennis balls as markers is fine, but when you used curb-height cones on top, the failure rate went way up. :(
Was that because your saddle bags would clear the tennis ball halves on the inside of the corner but the cones were too tall to clear, or that your fender was hitting the cones on the outside of the corner
With this basic technique the teach, I know I can do U-turns in 2'. I'll keep practicing so that I can reduce that further.
Good idea to try to make it tighter, as my owners manual on page 9-1 says:
Minimum turning radius:
3500 mm (137.8 in)
That is just under 11 feet 6 inches......... now THERE is a U-Turn!!!!!!!!
BTW I am not under 15 feet myself.... yet.... but with posts like yours, I will be motivated to work on it!!!!
THANKS for your comments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just wanted to put my 2 cents in about Ride Like A Pro videos. When I bought my first gen last year I went to get my Motorcycle endorsement on my license and BOMBED the riding test embarassingly on my first try.
I had let my old endorsement lapse when I sold my last bike and in the 20 year interim, the test changed drastically. I questioned if I had made a mistake in buying a big bike. Then a friend I work with loaned me his copy of Ride Like A Pro IV. I watched the video start to finish and then hit Walmart for a couple of cans of tennis balls to cut in half to make my own practice cones. I practiced an hour a day 3 days a week for the next 2 weeks, reviewing parts of the DVD each time before going out and practicing on the bike.
When I went back to re-test, the examiner asked if I was sure I wanted to try the test on a big cruiser, something I thought laughable. If I couldn't pass the test on the bike I was going to ride on the road what business did I even have being on the road? Its like asking someone testing for their CDL if they wouldn't be more comfortable driving a Pinto.
Anyway, I took the test and passed EVERY section with flying colors...to the point where the examiner actually used the word, "Wow!" As I was stowing my gear before heading into the office to have my picture taken for my license 3 people who had been observing the tests came over to ask how I had learned to ride like that. I told them how I had bombed the first test and used the Ride Like A Pro dvd.
Im a huge believer in it. Get on this list or if you cant wait, and need to pass a test to get out on the road for the summer, its worth buying a copy.

Was that because your saddle bags would clear the tennis ball halves on the inside of the corner but the cones were too tall to clear, or that your fender was hitting the cones on the outside of the corner
The rear wheel of the bike trails the inside of the front wheel track on curves. It's just the geometry. So, the front wheel could clear the cone, and the rear tire could clear the tennis ball, but it would shave a cone. In other words, you have to clear the cone by a foot or so before your rear tire could clear the cone.
Good idea to try to make it tighter, as my owners manual on page 9-1 says:
That is just under 11 feet 6 inches......... now THERE is a U-Turn!!!!!!!!
BTW I am not under 15 feet myself.... yet.... but with posts like yours, I will be motivated to work on it!!!!
That's really interesting. The motorman of our class says the minimum u-turn of a H-D police bike (Road King) is 18'. He is the instructor for the police course, and he was inspiring to watch. We did a maneuver inside a circle painted at 24', with another concentric circle at 20'. He could get it at maybe 19', with some at 18'. It looked impossibly tight. Believe me, his handlebars were locked.
Kudos to you for getting inside that 18' circle. I'd love to work on that and show up during the practice hour and demonstrate a 15' circle. I mentioned in my thread about the class that our official class ended around noon. From noon to 1PM, they keep the course up and current and former students can practice. I live 10 minutes from the class, so I plan to go back and wow the instructors. :happy34:

I like that friction sone principle also. Except I have to wonder how this would affect clutch wear since you are actually ridding the clutch
KiteSquid
05-19-2009, 05:02 PM
You will probably have the clutch wear out quicker, but IMHO, it is worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The good thing about having a wet clutch bike that shares the engine oil is the clutch will stay cooler than a dry clutch (like most cars with a manual transmission) or a wet clutch that has a separate oiling system (Like most H-D's)
The down side is the worn off friction material gets dumped into the oil, so that is why I use a high efficiency oil filter (e.g.: PureOne from Purolator or EAO from Amsoil) and change it every 4,000 miles.

The Dvd taught me about the friction point, but the eyes to the direction you're going was old knowledge refreshed . I admit I knew that but had not been practicing it like I should. Now that I'm on a bigger and heavier bike it was a good thing to relearn. I'm practicing the steps now.Good luck to all.

Let's see, what did I learn from the DVD. Hmm, basically the most important thing from the DVD is to practice. I have been taught the same thing when I took a driving course years ago, but needed a great refresher like this. My biggest issue is doing the practicing part. If I try to get on the bike, my faithful Co-pilot wants to ride too. Don't like practicing much with a passenger till I have practice alone - funny that way. Oh well, good to see I am still doing the most important things mostly correctly.:big-grin-emoticon:

Great idea, KiteSquid -- thanks for coordinating. Have now sent the DVD on to Pilot. I think the thing that really resonated with me was the need to really turn your head far to the left or right when doing U-turns etc. The constant reminder NOT to look right in front of the bike when turning was good, too, I thought.
Thanks again!

I finished watching the DVD for the 3rd time and will be mailing it out to Scooter as soon as he emails me his address.
I finished watching the DVD for the 3rd. time. I have to say that I found out why it was hard to ride when my wife was on the back. The problem always accrued while going around curves and while turning. The bike just did not seam to handle the way I thought it should. I never could figure out why it handled well with others on the bike, just when my wife was back there. She does not ride very much in fact the last time she went for a ride was over a year ago, she ‘s just not a bike person.
Well after watching the DVD it was because my wife was looking the opposite way of the turn and she was throwing the balance off. I never would have figured it out if I had not watched the DVD, now I think I will take the course if it ever gets around DE.
Thanks KiteSquid for putting this together.

PLEASE Remember to please post something you learned from the video.
BTW, if you are tired of waiting, or would like to purchase your own copy please click HERE (http://www.ridelikeapro.com/) to order and be sure to ask for your Venture Rider Forum member discount. IIRC it saves you $5. BTW this DVD is worth every penny!!!!!!!

OK, I have a suggestion.... the list of people is long and I am trying to send the video on to the next person, but some on the list seem to be missing and others don't receive private messages, which means that there is no good way to contact with them...can someone (like a moderate type person) check to make sure that the people on the list are still on VR and if they still want it.
I am just waiting to hear from the last person I've tried contact...but it might make the video move easier. Just a thought, this is a fairly old thread.

I loved to have put a tracking device in that DVD case, and see where that thing has been in the past number of months. Anybody else autographed the sheet I put in the one that came Down-Under??

I don't have the one with the autographed sheet in it, but I was sent another one right before we had the Cody Roundup.
Can someone tell me who I need to send it to next?

How about printing the list and keeping it with the DVD?
I know I was on the list and it has been over a year. I must be getting close by now.
