View Full Version : Cherohala - Dragon Ride Yesterday
A friend of mine just got new rubber on his Shadow Spirit and decided it was time to go scuff them in, so we took off yesterday at about 11:00 am. It was already close to 60f.
We rode up 575/515 to Ellijay, Ga and then took what we refer to as the Blue Ridge Bypass. It's a back road (Boardtown, I think) that comes out on hwy 5 past Blue Ridge. (Here is where I started feeling guilty! I thought "Man, I should've called Brokespur!" but we were already past his place. Sorry Ken, my bad!)
We took a left and went up hwy 68, which is a great ride in itself, to Tellico Plains Tn. Grabbed a jalepeno burger at Hardies and jumped on the Cherohala Skyway. Great ride, temp dropped to 51, little traffic, only had to pass two cars the whole way. Just had to watch out for gravel and other "winter debris". There was a surprising amount of snow on the slopes on the south side of the road above four thousand feet. At one point there was a strip of snow/ice on the road that was about 5 feet long. I pointed it out to Gary and watched in my mirror as he proceeded to ride right down the length of it! Proves you can ride on ice and not go down. Also proves you go where you look!
After that we rode up to the Dragon, the store is open for the season again. We asked about the conditions on the road and they said it is white from the winter salt and some places have piles a couple of inches deep. Even so we rode it pretty hard, you just had to keep an eye on things a little more. I only slid once on some salt. It was a superb ride up and back. Quite a few people there for a Thursday, but nothing like the weekends.
We wanted to do another run but it was already 10 minutes to 5 and we wanted to make Bike Night at Hooters Canton. We were still 2 1/2 hours away! It was the first "Official" bike night, although a friend and I have been going almost every Thursday night thru' the winter, lowest temp we saw was 27f. Last night saw about 50-60 bikes.
After Bike Night I rode with another friend to escort a lady friend, that rides a Road King, home before heading home myself.
All in all I did 401 miles yesterday and managed to ride to the Sky, slay a Dragon, drink beer, look at some nice bikes and escort a lady home! (I won't claim to be a gentleman:rotf:)
Man, it don't get much better!!! :thumbsup2:

It's been pretty nice here the last couple days too, especially after last weekend, LOTS of bikes out and about. Mine's in the basement awaiting new tires but I've got the itch in a bad way. You Southern folks got it made most all year don't ya! We moved our oldest son and wife to Orlando the first weekend in January and after we got past Atlanta we started seeing a lot of bikes, folks riding in tee shirts in Florida. Made me wish I'd trailered mine behind the van we took. I also love riding the Cherohala, and especially the Ocoee River/N. Georgia area, got a few friends from another forum that live in that area too.

I don't really think of Kentucky folks as northerners, (read Yankees) but I guess y'all are pretty far north. :confused24:

Still freezing up here in Western New York. Lots of snow in the fields and yards and tons of salt residue waiting to chew the paint off your ride if you dare to brave the elements.
Oh well...at least we get a few weeks to ride each year :) the rest of the year we get to hear you all talk about riding in nice weather or dream about it. :)

Glad you had a good ride.......I like that whole area up there......it is pretty nice. All we have around here close is pine trees.....and sand and more pine trees and sand........yep that is a nice place. As for riding the Dragon Hard.....that is what FreeBird told me when I got the Wing.....he was not quite that old yet:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:I will see you coming down while I am still going up.........:stirthepot::stirthepot:

To me, it seems that your 'kindly offered Help' might be way too much misunderstood.
And posting up such Pics after describing a fine Day of riding might be more than Cream on the Pie.
There's a fair Chance that this could be seen as the Straw which broke the camel's back.
That was my only concern ... :080402gudl_prv::080402gudl_prv::080402gudl_prv::0 80402gudl_prv::080402gudl_prv::080402gudl_prv::080 402gudl_prv:

A hair Dryer would work for the size of your driveway. Oops just relized you probably don't own one. :rotf:I may have an extra as I do not need it anymore either. :sign20:

Not sure why your laughing you don't need a hair dryer either. :stirthepot::sign20:
I would be glad to bring my snowblower over to help plow a path to the back yard, but he said he was gonna start showelling, (my offer still stands)

Brad, this might be a 'save the Planet' Thing or he's wants to do something good on his Fitness.
Or, the 'civil servant which is survivin on fixed income during right wing government's destruction-of-the-middle-class campaign can't afford snow blowers' are just plain to stubborn to accept your generous Offer ...
